Hugo Adventure: Writing Content Has Never Been Easier

From photos to markdown, creating with Hugo feels like freedom.

Content Creation with Hugo: A Liberating Experience

Today, I turned my attention to the most important part of any website: the content. After days of tinkering, learning, and customizing, I’m finally writing the pages that will bring this site to life. And I have to say, using Hugo for content creation feels like a breath of fresh air.

Telling My Story

I decided to start with the story of this adventure—the very posts you’ve been reading. It feels fitting to document my journey as the first content on this site. The process of writing in markdown is so simple and efficient, I can focus entirely on the story I want to tell without distractions.

A Personal Touch with My Photography

Every website needs visuals, and I knew exactly where to find mine: my own photography. I pulled about 20 photos from my Keekeh Rojas Photography portfolio to use throughout the site.

Using my own photos instead of stock images adds a personal touch that makes this site feel uniquely mine. Whether it’s landscapes, portraits, or urban shots, each image tells a part of my story.

Why Hugo Feels Liberating

Working with Hugo has reignited my passion for web development. Here’s why:

  • Ease of Use: Writing in markdown is intuitive, and creating pages feels effortless.
  • Low Maintenance: No plugins to update, no database to secure, no constant fear of hacks.
  • A Webmaster’s Joy: This method brings back the hands-on feeling of being a webmaster, building and maintaining sites with care.

There is a caveat to using static site generators (SSGs): they may not be ideal for every type of website. But for many projects—like this blog—it covers all the basics and then some.

Rediscovering Joy in Web Development

I didn’t realize how much I missed the simplicity of building a site until I started this journey with Hugo. The joy, the creativity, and the sense of control are all back. This adventure has reminded me why I fell in love with web development in the first place.

Tomorrow, the site goes live. I’ll share more about what’s next as I continue to build and grow this space. For now, I’m just happy to be creating again.
